Singer and actress, Jenifer Lopez sang Happy Birthday while she performed at the former Soviet bloc country, Turkmenistan for its leader. Her representative later said that Lopez would not have performed if she knew that the country faced human right issues. A statement issued by her spokesperson to the Associated Press revealed that the event she attended was hosted by China National Petroleum corp. and was never a political event.
The statement on the singer’s behalf also said that the birthday serenade was a request by the corp. at the last minute before the singer took the stage to which Lopez obliged graciously.
But Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the leader who is highly criticized for his oppressive nature that was questioned by human rights attended this event. The UN assistant general who visited this place last month said that there is lot more work to do to make sure that that the place meets up with the requirements of human rights even though it has made some considerable development.
This incident of performing at Turkmenistan has made Lopez the latest addition to the celebrities list who are under scrutiny for their performance in countries that face human rights violations.
